The name comes from the dyed pattern looking like a spider's web. The fabric is hooked onto a hook and wrinkled with the fingertips like the bamboo skeleton of an umbrella, and then the wrinkles are gathered and the thread is rolled up finely from the base and squeezed to create the pattern.
