What is tenugui?
Tenugui are functional in a variety of situations
They last a very long time and can be used in many ways
History of Tenugui
Tenugui are said to have been used for over 1,000 years in Japan.
You can use them as washcloths or towels, as decorative or utilitarian wrapping, and for cleaning. Tenugui are a uniquely Japanese item that can be used for a variety of purposes.
The appeal of tenugui is that the more you wash them, the softer they become.
They come in a wide variety of colors and patterns, and can also be used as fashion accessories.
Size and Materials
A standard tenugui measures approximately 90 cm × 33 cm (35 in × 13 in) and is made of 100% cotton. Unlike Western towels, the edges are left unhemmed, allowing the fabric to dry quickly and remain lightweight.
With regular use and washing, the fabric softens beautifully and gradually fades in color—much like raw denim. Its unfinished edges naturally fray over time, creating a unique fringe that adds character and reflects your personal use. Each tenugui becomes uniquely yours.
The Craft of Tenugui
Tenugui are sustainable
They are hand-dyed by craftsmen in Japan.
By using tenugui for a long time, one can enjoy the subtle changes that occur with prolonged use.
KAMAWANU tenugui are dyed using a traditional method called “chusen”, developed over 100 years ago. Unlike surface printing, this technique dyes the fabric all the way to the core of the fibers, creating vibrant colors and soft textures that age naturally with use.
Experienced artisans hand-dye each tenugui, adjusting their technique based on seasonal temperature, humidity, and fabric condition. And more
