A new 2026 design.

This tenugui features the traditional Benkei-stripes pattern, known for the interplay of vertical and horizontal lines, reimagined in rich, chocolate-inspired tones. The subdued, elegant colors make it perfect for everyday use—as a placemat, a wrapping cloth, or a decorative accent.
It is dyed using the highly skilled futakata-zome technique, also called double-stencil dyeing (Hosokawa-zome). First, the horizontal stripes are dyed, then the vertical stripes are overlaid. Using two separate stencils and two dyeing passes creates depth and natural overlapping of colors.

The subtle variations where the stripes intersect, along with the gentle irregularities unique to hand-dyeing, make each piece truly one-of-a-kind. A tenugui full of character, showcasing the artistry of expert craftsmen.

Tradition Meets Craftsmanship

Each tenugui is hand-dyed by craftsmen using the traditional CHUSEN technique, which creates beautiful gradations of color unique to this process.

How to Use

Tenugui are an essential part of everyday life in Japan — used for wiping hands, wrapping gifts, or decorating a space. Each piece carries the warmth of craftsmanship and the beauty of imperfection that comes with hand-dyeing. Want to know more? Check out some creative ways to use your tenugui here.

Specially Crafted Tenugui Fabric

Our tenugui are made from cloth specially crafted for everyday use. Soft, absorbent, and smooth, they become even more comfortable to use over time.

Enjoy Tenugui Fading

Our tenugui are hand-dyed with a generous amount of dye. With each wash, excess dye gradually comes off, and the colors evolve slowly. How you use and wash your tenugui will affect its fading, so enjoy watching it change over time.
