This is a tenugui based on the ukiyo-e by Utagawa Kuniyoshi and his student Utagawa Yoshifuji called Shinban Andon Utsushi Kageboshi (New Printing: Lantern Shadow Show).
The ghosts depicted by Yoshifuji possess a humorous and cute side. Far from being merely scary creatures, they have a friendly feel. The spirits here are not limited to just those of humans, but also include the ghosts of animals, bonsai trees, and even common household items like kettles. The design takes a unique approach to portraying ghosts in a way that is familiar within the daily lives of common people in the Edo era. And the humans who are surprised and flustered by these ghosts and yokai are also depicted comically, giving this ukiyo-e a story-like feel.
Illuminated by the soft light of lanterns, the silhouettes that emerge are fantastical and engaging. The effect is a tenugui that is a fusion of tradition and playfulness.
You can cover things with tenugui, spread tenugui out, and wrap items in them --- your imagination is the limit for how you want to use them in different daily life situations. The fine-pattern komon cloth is easy to use and especially good for summertime fun activities like camping and festivals. This design is packed with the charm of Japanese yokai, making it a wonderful gift item as well.
※The idea for this tenugui was inspired by an ukiyo-e print, but it is a completely original design.

Our Tenugui towel are dyed by hand by craftsmen using a dyeing technique called CHUSEN.
