This tenugui depicts tsukumogami, which are tools that have turned into yokai.
In ancient Japan, it was believed that all objects had souls. Tools were especially thought to turn into supernatural creatures after 100 years, but would become yokai if they were thrown away in their 99th year out of bitterness that they could have gained a soul if they had only been used one more year. It is these yokai that were known as tsukumonogami. Theirs is a slightly humorous embodiment of the importance of respecting old, well-used tools and the spirit of treating items well.
You can cover things with tenugui, spread tenugui out, and wrap items in them --- your imagination is the limit for how you want to use them in different daily life situations. The fine-pattern komon cloth is easy to use and especially good for summertime fun activities like camping and festivals. This design is packed with the charm of Japanese yokai, making it a wonderful gift item as well.

Our Tenugui towel are dyed by hand by craftsmen using a dyeing technique called CHUSEN.
