This is a tenugui designed based on Denshin Kaishu Ippitsu Gafu (Picture Album of Drawings at One Stroke), an art instruction book that Katsushika Hokusai made for his apprentices and subsequent painters. This instruction book is a massive compilation of one-stroke illustrations created with minimal brushwork, and is also notable for collecting simplified illustrations depicting the lifestyles and leisure activities of people in the Edo era. The egret tenugui depicts a flock, evoking the poise of the egret, which is held to be a sacred creature due to its pure and noble white color. This bird has been a symbol of peace and prosperity in Japan since ancient times, and even appears in myths and legends as a messenger of the gods. It is also deeply connected to festivals and place names. The mist-like blurring and haziness effect unique to chusen stencil-dyeing produces a quiet waterside ambiance.
