KAMAWANU Furoshiki
A square cloth as your canvas
A new series from KAMAWANU celebrates the freedom of expression through a variety of dyeing techniques. Each square cloth becomes a canvas for creativity, allowing designs to reflect not just the act of wrapping, but also your mood, the changing seasons, or moments of inspiration.
With every use, a furoshiki can take on a new form, with new possibilities emerging with each user. Enjoy it as a fabric that naturally accompanies daily life, bringing the same sense of excitement as coordinating an outfit or rearranging a room.
How to Use
Compact 50 cm Size — Perfect for Your First Furoshiki
Our 50 cm furoshiki offer an ideal introduction to the art of wrapping. Their compact size makes them highly versatile for everyday uses—whether as a handkerchief, lunch wrap, or short bandana. The lightweight fabric makes them easy to use.
These furoshiki are not only a charming souvenir or gift for friends and visitors from abroad but also a thoughtful choice for small celebrations or special occasions.
A new 2026 design.
Inspired by the traditional maekake aprons long used in Japanese restaurants and shops, this design reimagines them as an easy-to-use furoshiki. It features a stylish hanjie (visual wordplay) motif by KAMAWANU, carrying the auspicious message:
一斗二升五合 (itto ni sho go go) — “May your business prosper more and more.”
When draped over your knees, the cloth even resembles a traditional apron, making it a fun and playful furoshiki to use.
The pattern is based on a classic wordplay using traditional Japanese measuring units:
一斗 (itto) – one to (equal to ten sho, or double five sho) → pronounced itto, echoing “go-shobai” (business)
二升 (ni sho) – two sho → sounds like “masu masu” (more and more)
五合 (go go) – five go (half a sho) → echoes “hanjo” (prosperity)
Together, these elements form a playful rebus expressing the lucky phrase.
What Is Hanjie?
Hanjie is a type of visual puzzle that became popular among ordinary people during the Edo period. Words or names are represented through combinations of related images, often using puns or similarities in sound. The fun lies in deciphering the pictures to uncover the original word or phrase.
About the Dyeing
Hand-printed (nassen) designs are created using a traditional stencil technique. Skilled artisans prepare a separate stencil for each color and carefully apply them to the fabric one by one. This method allows intricate designs to be reproduced and helps prevent colors from fading.
About the Fabric
Our furoshiki are crafted from lightweight cotton with a soft touch and delicate translucency that beautifully showcases intricate designs. Carefully woven from fine threads, the fabric has a smooth feel and a subtle, refined sheen.
*Please note: As the fabric differs from that used for hand-printed (nassen) furoshiki, there may be slight differences in texture.
