This is a design we adapted especially for the tenugui format, based on a rabbit that appears in the 15-volume art instruction series Hokusai Manga (Hokusai’s Sketches), illustrated by Edo-era ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai.
The word manga, as used here, means sketch, and is meant to explain that the series is composed of whatever Hokusai felt like drawing at the moment. The first volume was published in 1814, when Hokusai was 55. He already had over 200 apprentices, and he made the illustrations for people he could not instruct directly. Hokusai Manga displays exuberant depictions of a wide array of subjects, including people, animals, and scenery. And this tenugui design captures that same charm.
Our Tenugui towel are dyed by hand by craftsmen using a dyeing technique called CHUSEN.
